To Eat and Drink in Amsterdam
Students and newbie tourists make much ado of Amsterdam’s seedier attractions, while older, more cultured travelers take time to appreciate its historic buildings and churches, its art museums and canals. But the place where all groups come together is at the table. Amsterdam’s food scene is as diverse as any big city, with many surprises and bargains to enjoy.
Classic
Traditional Dutch fare can be a little stodgy, but there are exceptions. The famous cheeses never get boring if you’re a cheese lover—you can eat great hunks of herb-spiced yellow cheese with light Dutch bread every day—and the pannenkoeken. AKA, the pancakes. Not restricted to breakfast as in unfortunate America, the Dutch pancakes come in various sizes and densities, and are topped with all kinds of stuff. The Dutch were putting bacon in or on top of their pancakes long before bacon enthusiasts here started doing it. They also eat crepe-like pancakes with coffee as a mid-afternoon snack. It’s the perfect pick-me-up on a rainy afternoon.
