In the big honking red-blooded petroleum-powered cowboy city of Houston, newcomers are almost guaranteed to feel overwhelmed by the sheer booming scope. Come dinnertime, no matter how badly you might want a nice steak or some killer Mexican food, the impulse might be to stay in the hotel and order room service.

But wait! Here comes Houston Culinary Tours to the rescue. This new themed tourism program enlists Houston’s best chefs to share their favorite insider restaurant finds through the Houston CVB.

Must-See San Antonio

Riverwalk-san-antonio A mosaic of culture, color, and charm, San Antonio provides the perfect blend of Mexican and American flavors. The Spanish Colonial missions are one of the city's biggest attractions. When you've had enough history, take a stroll along the Riverwalk or head to Padre Island National Seashore for some sun and sand. And remember the Alamo—it's a must-see.

San Antonio Family Trip Highlights

TX, San Antonio_San Antonio Children's Museum_front entrance (Mark Langford) Unexpectedly and in an “Aw, shucks” sort of way, San Antonio knocks it out of the park as a kid-friendly destination. This city boasts a Texan-sized helping of kid-friendly attractions—from national chains like Six Flags to unique attractions like the newly opened Morgan's Wonderland, the country's first amusement park specifically designed for special-needs children.

Start at the Alamo—it’s free, it's in the center of everything, and it's, um, the ALAMO. You don’t want your kids to be the ones sitting in class someday going, “The Alamo was a Hollywood movie, right?”. No, no, no. Take 'em on a quick circuit through the real thing, stop by the gift shop and get your Davy Crockett hats, then walk down the street to the San Antonio Children’s Museum. This is a miniature replica of San Antonio, with many interactive exhibits including a little bank and a “bubble room” (something many adults secretly wish was available in a grownup version). Right across the street from the museum is Buckhorn Saloon—you’ll know it by the costumed characters drawling, “Hey little partner!” as you walk by. It’s all-ages, so go in and get a root beer drawn the old-fashioned way, check out the collection of spurs, and maybe spend a li’l time in the arcade.

Houston Trip Highlights: Children's Museum of Houston

Childrens-museum-houston Creative play comes naturally at the top-ranked Children's Museum of Houston. Kids discover pond life and watch eco-friendly puppet shows at the EcoStation, shop at a re-created Mexican village's open-air market, and dress up and role-play at the Victorian Playhouse. There’s even a “city” run by kids, Kidtropolis, featuring a real-life, kid-sized metropolis complete with a skyline, city government, occupations, and the systems that make a city work. The museum offers free family nights on Thursday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m.

What to Do in Dallas: Go Deep in Deep Ellum

Dallas-deep-ellum Dallas’ east end Deep Ellum district is the place to go for live music, plus a good selection of hip clubs, bars, and restaurants. Formerly the city’s warehouse district, Deep Ellum has been a hotbed of blues and Afro-American jazz since the early 1900s. Today the mix also includes rock, Latin, and alternative beats. Dining options range from Tex-Mex and American fare to pizza, sushi, and independent coffeehouses.

Dallas Trip Highlights: Sixth Floor Museum

The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, Dallas, TX_DPD Photo Inside Perch (The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza) Dallas' Sixth Floor Museum overlooks peaceful Dealey Plaza at the west end of downtown Dallas. It was from here, from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository Building, that the fateful shot that killed President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, was fired (at least according to the official report; conspiracy theorists may disagree with this version of history). This small museum not only brings back the tragic events of that day, but also pieces together the times of Kennedy's presidency and the events surrounding his death. The museum is open daily except Christmas Day and Thanksgiving Day. Nearby lodging options include the Hyatt Regency (300 Reunion Blvd.) and Art Deco-style Hotel Lawrence (302 Houston).

Houston Day Trips: Galveston Island

Galveston-texas Originally inhabited by members of the Karankawa and Akokisa tribes, the Texan island of Galveston, a close neighbor to metropolis Houston, was once a haven for pirates. Named in honor of Bernardo de Gálvez in 1785, the city's first permanent settlements were constructed around 1816 by pirate Louis-Michel Aury as a base of operations. The next year, Aury returned to Galveston from a defeat at the hands of the Spanish and found the city occupied by piratical rival Jean Lafitte.
